 5I3A - TANZANIA: Igor, UA3DJY is active from the DIT Comm Club Station in Dar es Salaam on all bands, and will continue until March 1. He has been spotted on 40, 20 & 15 CW and SSB on 17 & 15. QSL via RK3AOL.

 6V7T - SENEGAL: F5RAV will be active with this call February 18 to March 1. No details of the operation were given except QSL via home call.

 7Q7HB - MALAWI: Harry, GØJMU is beginning a 3 month stay in Malawi. Most activity will be on the digital modes and CW. QSL route is the same as before-via GØIAS, DIRECT ONLY with sufficient funds to cover return postage.

 CEØZ - JUAN FERNANDEZ: XRØZA: This is Toshi, JA8BMK and he will be active until February 2. QSL to home call CEØZ/LA9SN: Al will be active from Robin Crusoe Island March 10-23. He plans to operate mostly CW on 80-10. Ask about QSL route.

 J38XX - GRENADA: Ulf, DL5AXX will use this call February 10-23. He plans to concentrate on the low bands and will also be active for the ARRL CW contest. QSL to home call.

 KHØ/JA3EGZ - MARIANAS: Mega will be active from Saipan February 3-8, and plans to focus on 80 & 40 meters.

 T8 - PALAU: Mike, JA6EGL/T88sm and Hiro, JA6KYU/ T88HS will be active from Koror Island (OC-009 ) February 10-16. Look for them on CW/SSB 80-10. QSL to respective home call,  DIRECT ONLY.

 V31SU - BELIZE: Robert, N7MSU will be active from several locations in Belize between February 4-23. He will operate mostly 40 & 20 CW/SSB. QSL to home call.

 VK9 - NORFOLK ISL: VK2ACC/9 will be working 40-6 SSB (perhaps PSK31) February 4-9. He will run 100 watts with a Buddipole and end-fed wire. QSL to home call, bureau or direct.

 VP9/OH1VR - BERMUDA: Seppo will be here January 28 to February primarily for the CQ WW 160 CW contest. QSL to home

V73AS - MARSHALL ISLANDS

Dave, N8AG sent the following: “My brother Jim operated from the Marshall Islands in the late 80's through late 1991. I was his QSL Manager during that time. He recently found his log for operation as V73AS and has sent it to me. The period covered is from December 7, 1989 through September 2, 1991. I will get any QSLs needed to the stations requesting them (if they are in the log) as long as they supply sufficient postage along with an addressed envelope. I believe 1 IRC or a Green Stamp should cover it. Jim thought the log had been lost when he came back to the states. He also operated the club station, KX6DC/V73AZ but was not able to bring that log with him as multiple operators used it.”

YI9PSE - IRAQ

The YI9PSE team has received the approval and blessing of the Kurdistan Regional Government to conduct the first DXpedition from Kurdistan. The team has been invited to demonstrate amateur radio to the Kurdistan Regional Government Ministry of Interior officials, who will visit and observe the YI9PSE DXpedition team in action.

The Kurdistan Regional Government officials are very excited to learn more about amateur radio and see the first DXpedition from Kurdistan take place. They have reviewed, approved of our plans and blessed our operation.

See the web site for more: <http://www.yi9pse.com>.

SV2ASP/A - MOUNT ATHOS

A number of comments in the last few weeks indicate Monk Apollo has been working RTTY as it is a “silent” mode that doesn’t disturb the others. He is reportedly working the low bands - 160 - 30, between 1700 & 2100Z.

3CØ - ANNOBON

With a high “VERY Need” in Asia and “high” in NA, this will be a welcome operation. Elmo, EA5BYP and Javier, EA5KM will be making a trip in April for two weeks of operation. Operation on 160-10 is planned on CW/SSB/RTTY, focusing on the low bands too. Keep watching for more details.

KG4 is the prefix for two different DXCC Entities.  Some are from Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) and others are from mainland USA.  Numerous cluster databases assume all KG4 callsigns are stations from Gitmo, says NT5C, John Warren.  So how does one know which are from America and which are from Guantanamo Bay?  KG4 stations with one or three letters in their suffix are from the good ole USA and those with two letter suffixes are from Gitmo.

The XR0Y team, now on Easter Island, say they are missing some vital equipment.  Team leader SQ8X, Stan, says an IC-756 Pro-III and an RTTY interface did not arrive on the island with them.  It's unknown whether they're lost or stolen, or just delayed somehow by an airline mixup.  There is no internet connection at the team's QTH, though there is an internet caf, a little ways away where log updates can be done.  Ham radio and SMS are their main communications links.  They will not do any RTTY until the interface box arrives.  And the weather hasn't been great:  torrential rain and strong winds, delaying the launch of the 80/160 vertical, but the 30M vertical was going up soon.

This weekend Daylight Savings Time ends in the United States.  In most places in the United States at 2 AM local time on Sunday November 1st citizens will move their clocks back one hour.  That's fine to move your local time but do not change your GMT clocks!  GMT never adjusts, other than a leap second.  So for example here in the Eastern Daylight Standard Time (EDST) Zone we go from being four hours behind GMT to five hours (EST) behind.  While we are on the subject all Amateur Radio operators should be logging all QSOs in GMT and using GMT on their QSL cards for the time and the date!  As a reminder all references to time in The Daily DX are in GMT or Zulu, unless otherwise stated.  This includes the dates and times!  For more information on GMT, Zulu and UTC check out http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/timezone.htm.

Yesterday the ARRL DXCC Desk approved the October 2009 Conway Reef DXpedition for DXCC.  The call was 3D20CR, but they also accredited the call 3D2VC.  Today a correction was sent as the second call was 3D2CV.  As a reminder the Conway Reef DXpedition does not plan to post their logs to a log search.  The team does plan to post their logs to LOTW.  Those who donated to the Conway Reef DXpedition before the DXpedition have been reporting receipt of the 3D20CR QSL cards, which were apparently snail mailed from New Caledonia just a few days after the completion of the DXpedition.  Keep an eye on the 2009 Conway Reef Web site at http://www.conwayreef2009.de/.

Four killed in plane crash at Summerville Airport
Published Wednesday, October 21, 2009 8:19 AM
By David Berman
Summerville Journal Scene
Stefan Rogenmoser/Journal Scene
Dorchester County Administrator Jason Ward shows reporters an aerial photo of the Summerville Airport and points to the area where the twin-engine Piper Aztec crashed shortly after takeoff.
Four men on their way to a ham radio competition in the Bahamas were killed in a small plane crash Wednesday morning at the Summerville Airport in Jedburg, authorities said. About 6:20 a.m. the Summerville-based plane — a twin-engine, six-seat Piper Aztec — burst into flames after it crashed into a densely-wooded area shortly after taking off from Runway 24, Dorchester County Administrator Jason Ward said. Ward characterized the crash site 250 yards east of the runway as "extremely severe." A crew from the county public works department had to create a path to the wreckage. Chief Deputy Sheriff Sam Richardson said there was damage to treetops in the area of the crash. Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet has identified the four victims: pilot Peter Radding of North Charleston; front passenger James Randolph Hargenradar of Summerville; rear passenger Edwin Steeble of Summerville; and rear passenger Dallas Carter of Laurel, Del. Hargenradar was 55 years old, Nisbet said. The other men were in their 50s or 60s, he said. The four men were headed first to Fort Pierce, Fla. then onto the Bahamas where they planned to attend a ham radio competition, Nisbet said. Radding had flown to Delaware earlier this week to pick up Carter, Nisbet said. The men planned this weekend to participate in the CQ World Wide DX Competition, a contest that draws the participation of thousands of amateur radio operators from around the world, said Jon Zaimes, a friend of Carter's who lives in Delaware. Many operators, including Zaimes, communicate from their home stations during the contest, but traveling to another country, like the Bahamas, scores you more points, he said. Zaimes did not know Hargenradar or Steeble, but Radding and Carter were "major league amateur radio operators, known around the world for their endeavors," he said. Autopsies on all four men are scheduled for Thursday. Positive identification may require dental records, Nisbet said. Family members confirmed the men were planning to fly Wednesday. Radding's plane — the only one scheduled to depart from Summerville Airport on Wednesday morning — was missing from his hangar, but his vehicle was there, as was Steeble's, said Nisbet. Hargenradar's wallet was found in the wreckage, he said. Nisbet said it appears the severity of the crash, not the fire, is what killed the men. Before Radding was named as one of the victims, Ward alluded to him and his background in flying. "This person was a very experienced pilot who knew the area," Ward said. "He had been flying for over 40 years." It was extremely dark when the plane took off, Ward said. Airport Manager Don Hay said the weather was clear at the time. Nisbet said Radding filed a flight plan detailing his route and who was on board, but the plane never climbed high enough for those plans to be activated. County officials have said little about what may have caused the crash, instead deferring to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is the lead agency in the investigation and expected to arrive from Washington D.C. Thursday morning. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration in Columbia were already at the scene Wednesday. Stella Bazzle, who lives about a half-mile from the airport, described what she heard right before the plane went down. “The motor sounded like it was coming over the house. I heard the first explosion . . . then the second (explosion) wasn’t as loud,” she said. Of the engine noises, Bazzle said: “It was kind of a funny noise, like a grinding type thing.” Bazzle said she then heard ambulances and called her neighbor, who’d heard similar noises. Staff Writer Stefan Rogenmoser contributed to this report. Check back with journalscene.com for more details of the crash as they become available

3D2KJ (SP5DRH), Jacek and 3D2MJ (SP5EAQ), also Jacek, are now in the Fiji Island until October 28th.  They have not been able to erect the 80 meter antenna due to the weather conditions.  On Topband they have installed a 19 meter high vertical which has two elevated radials, located on the beach and most of the time in the water.  Jacek (3D2KJ) is using the vertical for receiving as they have not been able to install any receiving antennas do to space allocation.  They hope to soon have this resolved.

N4SF, Gay, AA4V, Steve, have plans to travel to Bermuda for this year's CQ World Wide Phone Contest.  They will be operating in the multi-two category and QRV as AA4V/VP9 during the contest.  Before and after the test they will be on the air using their home call/VP9.  QSL both calls via AA4V.  Bureau QSLs are OK.

Glorioso

September 16th:

Hi friends

After the first day only one station was set up.  The first day was reserved to exhibitions to the VIP.  At the end of the first day, a vertical for 80m was also in service.  They were on 80m all last night long.  A huge QRN annoyed the traffic.

Today a part of the crew sets up the antennas and the other, indoor is assembling rigs, PS, Pa’s and so on, for the two other stations.

The traffic will grow up during the day, more and more.

However, know that four times a day, the crew must stop the transmissions around 04h00, 09h00, 16h00 and 17h00 UTC, for control, especially of the AC supplies, by the Chief of maintenance crew and members.

Rafik, F5CQ, waits the first log to be uploaded on the web page at:

http://glorieuses2008.free.fr/searchlog.php tonight or tomorrow in the morning. The first part of the FT5GA log will be available, on Sept 17th, in the morning, + or less.

September 14 2009

Hi all

The FT5GA team landed safe on late Saturday, at Saint Denis de la Reunion Airport.

While this week end, the members of the crew spent some time to check and finalize the laptops and the Wintest soft.  They were heard doing that on the bands, barefoot, on Sunday using CW and RTTY, from Sainte Clotilde.

This morning the departure to Mayotte is scheduled around 0900 local time (05Z Monday).  Then they will fly to Glorieuse, were they are expected to land around the end of the afternoon.

To night I’ll call them by satellite cell phone to know approximately when they will begin to traffic.

The Higher Authorities of the Territory and the other from the French Forces presence on the island, may delayed that a little bit.  So it seems reasonable to expect the first signals on Tuesday in the morning (GMT time).

By the way I will thank all of our pilots and friends who are ready QRV to collect all the useful information to permit us the best traffic organization.

Jeff, F6AOJ, did a good job and send it us, about propagations predictions, Floyd is ready to receive and transmit us all what will be useful for the Whole American Continent.

We know the poor conditions today for the FT/G - Americas way so with the pilot help we will try to be as top as possible for them.

This morning, Lee, ZL2AL sent us some predictions for the VK/ZL area.  The Middle and Far Asian observation are awaited, and will come soon.

The FT5GA has the chance to offer you a rare possibility to get the 4th Most Wanted country (The last time was in the 1999/2000); Could we ask the Ham community to don’t mess up the party?

Please hear and hear before coming in the pile up.  The operators will give also some instructions while being behind laptops, keys and mikes.  They have received strict orders to keep the traffic under their control.

The logbooks will be able as soon as possible on the Web page at:

http://glorieuses2008.free.fr/searchlog.php.

Rafik, F5CQ our webmaster, will update as often as possible, receiving conditions permitting.

Thank to him too for the big job done in the past and for that he will have to do in the next days.

So beam your antennas, keep your ears and rigs ready.  The crew members are motivated as ever and they will do all their best to make all of you happy.

Didier F5OGL – Glorieuses 2009 leader

lapiz

As you begin to read this, members of the FT5GA team are expected to be on their way to Reunion Island (FR).  From there they will eventually take a military "transall" flight to Grande Glorieuse, the main island in the Glorioso Islands.  F5OGL, Didier Senmartin, who has been the point man for this DXpedition from day one, gives us some insight into why Glorioso is the number four DXCC entity on The DX Magazine's Most Wanted list.

This DXpedition project began some five years ago with a lot of behind the scenes work that many Amateur Radio operators are unaware of.

>From the very beginning the plan has been to combine an Amateur Radio

DXpedition with some needed maintenance to equipment in the Iles Eparses, says Didier.

The Eparses Islands, which translates into English as "scattered islands", are located in the Indian Ocean and include the islands of Europa, Glorioso, Tromelin and the Bassas da India atoll.  These islands were under the administration of the island of Reunion, until January 3, 2005.  Since then the islands have been administered by Terres Australes et Antartiques Francaises (TAAF).

The all French military FT5GA team have not received any special treatment and will be transported to the island just as any other "Zone Servicemen", as they are servicemen first and hams second.

The Eparses Islands are extremely protected as the French authorities are very keen about them.  The islands have very rare fauna and flora and the French are protecting the islands.  This is yet another reason of high difficulty to go to these islands.

Requests by tourist agencies and Amateur Radio DXpeditioners have been and will continue to be "systematically refused" in order to protect the islands.  Didier has been negotiating with both the "Reunion Prefect" and then the TAAF over the past five years.  In fact the TAAF will be sending a representative along with the crew on the military plane to Grande Glorieuse, where he will spend two days with the DXpedition team on the island.  He will be observing the DXpedition first hand as he watches the antennas and stations being assembled and then some actual operating.  "We think that's very important for the future of some DXpeditions to the Eparses Islands with our crew or some other", says Didier.

Sponsorship for this DXpedition, especially from the major manufactures was extremely difficult, probably because of the multiple postponements and the final short notice for this most recent attempt.

The team members going to Glorioso are supplying a majority of the equipment from their own gear, some of which was purchased, at no discount, with their own funds.  Didier thanks both the Provins F6KOP ARC and Batima, a French electronics store, for their support from the very beginning.  The team also thanks the many Amateur Radio clubs and associations for their support.

The FT5GA team of operators will include F5PRU, Jean Michel; F5LPY, Bernard; F5IRO, Freddy; F8CRS, David; and F4EGS, Philippe.  The pilot stations for this DXpedition are:

Europe - F6AOJ, Jeff - Glorioso-Eu-Pilot@orange.fr US East Coast - N5FG, Floyd - floydgee@datasync.com Japan - JA1ELY, Toshi - ja1ely@bb.mbn.or.jp Asia - UA0MF, Mike - ua0mf@mail.ru VK & ZL - ZL2AL, Lee - leejen@paradise.net.nz (note there is not a US West Coast or South American pilot station)

F5CQ, Rafik, is the team's Webmaster - http://glorieuses2008.free.fr/.

The FT5GA operating permit is valid from September 14th through October 10th.  The team will have four stations including a K3, two FT990's and an FT857D.  They will have three ACOM 1010 amplifiers and Dunestar band filters.  Spiderbeams will be used on 10 through 28 MHz and quarter wave verticals will be used on 160, 80 and 40 meters.  For receiving antennas on the low bands they will have access to K9AY receive antennas and beverages.

 As a reminder the FT5GA, Glorioso DXpedition team expects to depart from mainland France on Friday September 11th.  First stop will be Reunion Island (FR).  From there they will take a military flight to Grand Glorioso, however as of yesterday the team did not know the details of the "transall" flight that will get them to the number four most want DXCC entity.  With this in mind there is definitely no need to miss work, or any other events on Friday, in anticipation of working the all French Military team on Glorioso.  The team will be returning, presumably from Reunion Island, on October 8th.

Fe'ao Vakata, the Radio Licensing Officer for the Kingdom of Tonga (A3), today authorized Amateur Radio operation on the 60 Meter band

(5.330-5.405 MHz) on a secondary restricted basis, says A35RK, Paul.

The 60 meter band plan will be the same as authorized by the FCC (i.e.

"channelized" on the following frequencies only, USB only, 2.8 Khz maximum bandwidth, with a 50 watt pep ERP limit): 5330.5, 5346.5, 5366.5, 5371.5 and 5403.5 KHz.  60 meter authorization in A3 is effective immediately.

The international team heading to Tonga in November is planning to operate on 60 meters.  In fact they have received their A31 licenses, along with authorization for running up to 400 watts and use of the newly assigned 5 MHz band.  Their calls are as follows:

A31A special call (ik1pmr and group)

A31MR = IK1PMR

A31LEO = PA3LEO/K2LEO (YL)

A31WL = PA0BWL

A31NN = AA4NN

A31SN = OE2SNL

A31IW = DJ5IW

A31JC = DJ7JC

The team plans to use their new A31 prefix calls from November 19th to December 1st.  For more details on this DXpedition check out their Web page at www.ik1pmr.com/plans/a3/.

The addition of 60 meters is not the only change in Tonga as A3 stations have also gained more allocation on the 40 meter band with the expansion now covering 7.0 to 7.2 MHz.  Hopefully in the near future Amateur Radio operators from Tonga will be able to operate from

7.2 to 7.3 MHz on a secondary basis, as permitted by the IARRU Region III band plan.  A big thanks to Fe'ao Vakata, the Radio Licensing Officer, for "his efforts in revising and updating the Amateur Radio regulations in Tonga".

T31AA, Central Kiribati, is coming up soon.  Operator N3BQR, Craig Cook, left yesterday for Fiji and then will go on to Central Kiribati, to arrive around September 12.  This is a scientific reef survey from the New England Aquarium, planning to stop at each of the eight islands. All the islands are part of the Phoenix Islands, called Central Kiribati, T31, on the ARRL DXCC list.  They all count as IOTA OC-043.  Craig will be diving most of each day but hopes to be ashore in the afternoon on each island and getting on the air.  He says, "As far as I know, most of these islands, except for Kanton, have never been visited by any DXpedition, so this may be a first."  Look for T31AA mostly on 20M with his IC-7000 and SteppIR vertical and MFJ-1778 G5RV.  He is the only amateur on the expedition.  The island names are Birnie, Phoenix (Rawaki), Hull (Orona), Nikumaroro, Enderbury, McKean and Kanton.  The team heads home September 27.  QSL via N3BQR.

ET3JD, Jim DeLoach, WU0I, is a U.S. Foreign Service Officer stationed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  He says for now he is only accepting direct QSL cards.  Include a self-addressed envelope and send them to:

     Jim DeLoach, ET3JD

     2030 Addis Ababa Place

     Dulles VA 20189-2030

     USA

Jim says indicate on the QSL you wish them to come back via U.S. mail, which he think is probably more reliable, or Ethiopian mail, which will have a pretty stamp and be more exotic but might be less reliable.  If you don't state a preference, he plans to send it to you whichever way is less expensive.  Jim believes the Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society, EARS, is not in any way connected to any QSL bureau, so do not QSL via the bureau.  Jim is looking into on-line QSLing including eQSL and LoTW but internet access in residential locations in Addis Ababa is pretty scarce.

Jim says his current station status is that the formalities of bringing in gear are being wrapped up and he expects to have all the gear and the operating permission to use it within about two weeks.

Next he will build his antenna and set up the station.  He thinks he should hit the airwaves by October.  Jim plans to use PSK31 and do some RTTY in contests mostly, and SSB and CW, but his Morse is rusty, so be patient.  He says for sure he will try to get on 40, 20 and 15 and would like to try 30, 17, and 12 - especially 30 and 17.  He will be using homebrew wire antennas and will experiment with different designs.

S53R, Robert, has just arrived in Khartoum, Sudan, but his radio and amp were, at least report, still on the way from Slovenia.  He will try to get on the air as soon as he can, with the callsign ST2X hoped for.  Paperwork is in process.  Robert thinks he will soon be able to use the log periodic on the roof of his office building that is at about 25M off the ground and no one has been using it.  It should be pretty effective.  At his residence he will have an 80-10M full size vertical, hoping to be QRV by the end of September.  For those who need CQ Zone 34, this should be your chance.
