A few details not available in the referenced “NEWS” item on the web site are the following. Alex and David Jennings are brothers and their family has owned Swains Island for many, many years. The other person named, Tim Loloma, works for the Jennings family and is known as a very good mechanic. He will maintain the generators, refuel them and change the oil as needed during the two weeks they will be used.
This is a very expensive operation requiring a huge amount of coordination by many people. With Swains Island ranked at # 31 in the last Most Wanted Survey by The DX Magazine, the pileups are sure to be very large. I urge everyone to listen to the NH8S operators instructions. Don’t create more QRM by continuous calling when a QSO is in progress. There is a “DX Code of Conduct” and “Suggestions for DX Pileups” by Uncle DX. If you have not looked at these, please do so. It will make operating in pileups better for everyone.
Just in Monday morning…. Joe, W8GEX reports that he and Dietmer, DL3DXX will be arriving on American Samoa late Thursday evening (Aug 30) to coordinate last minute details.
The remainder of the team will arrive in Pago Pago late Monday evening (Sep 3). He says, “We anticipate leaving from Swains on Tuesday morning for the 24 hour boat trip. Since the equipment is already there, we should be able to get right to work on erecting the antennas and setting up stations. We are anxious to get on the air and will be QRV as soon as possible.”
